Power Integrations Unveils InnoSwitch5-Pro: A New Family of High-Efficiency, Programmable Flyback Switcher ICs
Power Integrations, renowned for innovation in high-voltage integrated circuits geared towards energy-efficient power conversion, has unveiled the InnoSwitch 5-Pro series. This series encompasses programmable, high-efficiency flyback switcher ICs renowned for surpassing 95 percent efficiency. Their innovative secondary-side controlled zero-voltage switching (ZVS) does away with the need for an additional, expensive high-voltage switch. Equipping a 750 V or 900 V PowiGaN primary switch, the IC combines a primary-side controller, FluxLink isolated feedback, secondary controller, and I2C interface to streamline the creation and production of slim, high-efficiency USB PD adapters with single or multiple ports. They cater to devices such as premium smartphones, notebooks, and other portable consumer electronics, including items requiring adherence to the USB PD EPR standard.
Adnaan Lokhandwala, the senior product marketing manager at Power Integrations, remarked, "Merging ZVS with GaN technology brings forth a revolution in power supply design. Such a blend leads to the disappearance of switching losses and capitalizes on the low conduction losses unique to GaN, enabling ultra-compact adapter designs that drastically reduce component count compared to asymmetric half-bridge circuits or active clamp options. As an illustration, we've showcased 140 W / 28 V USB PD adapters occupying merely 4.2 cubic inches and constructed with a scant 106 components. The flyback topology ingrained within InnoSwitch5-Pro ICs not only simplifies implementation compared to AHB but also assures operation from universal mains supply with or without PFC."
The InnoSwitch5-Pro series touts lossless sensing of input voltage on the secondary side, promoting adaptive DCM/CCM and ZVS regulation to enhance efficiency and ease design over varying line and load conditions. Additionally, the ICs incorporate tolerance trimming post-production to ensure precise constant-current output control—with an accuracy better than two percent—compliant with the UFCS protocol. The remarkable efficiency—exceeding 95 percent—empowers designers to forego the incorporation of thermal management components such as heat sinks, spreaders, and potting, thus diminishing size, weight, cost, and production complexity.
Marketed towards key sectors such as high-density USB PD 3.1 EPR, UFCS, and adapters supporting multiple protocols, the InnoSwitch5-Pro family is also an ideal choice for notebook adapters and single or multi-port aftermarket chargers and adapters.
